What kind of sugar is used to make cotton candy?
Spinning sucarosa into candy is easy with the cotton candy machine found at carnivals and town fairs across the country. And while regular table sugar will produce the tasty caramel, known as cotton candy or cotton candy, the secret sugar ingredient used involves some artificial coloring and flavor, called Flossine.
Table sugar
Beet or cane sugar processed into sucarosa can be used by most commercial cotton candy manufacturers. However, sugar mixed with Flossine is ideal. You can find Flossine where machines are sold and rented and it is simply the flavor and coloring that turns white cotton clouds into cone-shaped pink or blue candy at fairs.
Process
Cotton candy is made by heating sugar in liquid and then passing it through a rotating machine into small holes in the unit. As the thread or “silk” spins out of the rotating machine, they are wound into a paper cone.
Story
Although the notion of melting sugar to make candy has been around for centuries, credit for the first cotton candy goes to American inventors William J. Morrison and John C. Wharton, whose centrifugal machine for spinning sugar was center stage. From the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis.
Science
Sucrose, or sugar, is a carbohydrate molecule, made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen: C12H22O11. It is commonly derived from cane or beet sugar and its melting point is at 186 ° C.
Machines
Cotton candy making machines come in a variety of sizes and models, from children’s versions to industrial models designed for long-term use for profit. Sugar used in commercial machines can be purchased where the devices are sold or rented. However, carnival settlers generally add Flossine, which can also be bought in stores or online, to fine sugar to make their own less expensive cotton candy mix. Today, colors and flavors go from one side of the rainbow to the other.
If we want our cotton to have a different color or flavor, we have two options:
Add the white sugar along with the coloring and flavoring when preparing the cotton candy. It is not the most recommended option since the sugar and additives do not mix properly.
Prepare the sugar in advance with the desired color and flavor, after preparing it, add it to the machine to make the cotton. Here you can see How to color sugar to prepare Cotton Candy?
Buy the Sugar to make cotton already prepared. This is an easy option and there is a lot of variety on the market. Here you have a link where you can Buy Sugar for cotton.
Steps to follow for the Cotton Candy Recipe
How to make cotton candy with the machine
- Place the sugar already prepared in the central container. For this we use the measuring spoon that the machine brings, it can be 1 or 2 servings, depending on the amount of cotton we want to prepare.
- Turn on the cotton candy machine to heat the sugar and melt it. Some people heat the machine first, once hot, they turn it off and then add the sugar. This is not recommended.
- Once the sugar threads start to come out, we start to collect it with a wooden stick, turning successively so that the cotton forms like a cloud. The first time, which cloud may not be as beautiful as possible, but with the use of the machine, experience will give us the ability to make a spectacular cotton cloud.
