Add more RAM memory to your laptop in a simple way and without breaking anything
As in our desktop PCs, the RAM memory of our laptop can also be updated. At least, in the vast majority of models. However, the process of updating it can be much more complicated than with our desktops. Even so, it is not so complex that I can put you back from doing it. And, by taking several precautions, it is something that you can finish in just minutes.
Laptops sacrifice expandability in exchange for gaining portability, however there is one element that we can expand and this is RAM. An operation which is in principle simple, but which can have the appearance of complex. So that you are not afraid when making this hardware update to your PC, we have prepared this tutorial for you.
Reasons to expand the RAM of our laptop
With the change in usage habits, the consumption of RAM memory in our personal computers tends to increase, usually due to the following factors:
A greater number of tabs open in the browser.
Having several applications open, even some that we do not pay attention to.
Use of very large files.
In a desktop PC , this circumstance has a fairly simple solution: buy more RAM memory modules. If possible, the same make and model as the RAM that you already had previously installed and in laptops the same thing also happens, of course you have to make sure that it has SO-DIMM modules on the board, since you can find with problems when expanding the memory of the same.
If you are one of the people who works with heavy applications that require a lot of RAM, you will notice the difference in performance in the system and it will not suddenly become slower due to the fact that it is out of memory and the applications will not drag as before.
Laptop RAM is sold in SO-DIMM format
Unlike the RAM used in desktop PCs, RAM for laptops has a different format . This format is called SO-DIMM. And it’s quite a bit smaller than the DIMM format of RAM our desktops use.
Therefore, before doing anything, you should check what model of RAM your laptop uses. And find out if this one has a single RAM slot, or two. In the first case, the only way to update the RAM is to remove the original module. And change it for one of greater internal capacity. But of the same make and model as the one we have installed. In the second case, we should buy another SO-DIMM module identical to the one we have installed.
We want to place special emphasis on this aspect. Since laptops tend to be more delicate in terms of the RAM memories with which they work and therefore it is essential when choosing the DIMMs that we are going to buy.
Without SO-DIMM you cannot expand the RAM of the laptop
Before thinking about updating the RAM memory of a laptop, the first thing we should know is if our laptop is going to allow such expansion. We comment on this because, there are laptop models where the RAM is soldered to a PCB. And it cannot be expanded in any way. If this is the case with your laptop, we are very afraid that you will not be able to expand the RAM.
Because LPDDR4, LPDDR4X and LPDDR5 memory are not sold in DIMM or SO-DIMM format, but memory manufacturers sell them to be soldered directly on the chips to solder them to the main PCB of the laptop, in these laptops their RAM memory does not can be enlarged. So when you go to buy a laptop take a good look at the type of RAM it carries.
To find out if your laptop allows you to expand the RAM, you must locate the laptop’s maintenance manual. Most brands usually publish the specifications online, usually on the support website for each model.
How to expand laptop RAM
Before starting to handle our laptop, the essential thing is to disconnect the battery. Failure to do so can create a short circuit when touching the components inside the notebook.
Once we know for sure that we can update the RAM of our laptop, we must locate the slots where they are inserted. Some laptops have dedicated openings on the back, from where we can manipulate the RAM.
But, unfortunately, this is not always the case. And in many laptop models, you will have to remove the back of it to access the slots.
Be that as it may, to place the new RAM, we must insert it in the slot that we have free. We must introduce it, so that it forms an angle of between 30 and 45o with the horizontal.
With the module fully seated in the slot, it is time to press down so that the two side metal retention rods in the slot begin to retain the SO-DIMM.
Do not close your laptop yet
Once we have the RAM properly installed, do not close your laptop yet. It is time to check that everything has gone well during the installation of this. Therefore, connect the laptop to the power cable, without first connecting the battery.
Now, the only thing left to do is boot up the computer and check that the new RAM is recognized by it. Something we can do directly inside the BIOS, if we are in a hurry to check. Or we can wait for the operating system to load, and check it in the Windows Task Manager .
If everything works correctly, now you can turn off the laptop, disconnect it from the power supply, and close it completely, unless you want to use it and enjoy the extra performance that the RAM expansion will give you in many of your applications PC
